Prosecute the Bush Administration
It is interesting that with the recent show of evidence that the Bush
Administration hid evidence from Congress and may have broken the
law that there is still a resistance from Congress and the Obama
Administration to prosecute the people who were involved, especially Dick
Cheney. It is amazing the rational behind not prosecuting them,
coming from John McCain, is that it would effect the American image
around the world.
The problem is that the American image around the world has dwindled
due to the policies of that administration: their secret prisons,
Guantanamo Bay, torture. We are continuing that ill image by not
prosecuting the Bush Administration officials who have been responsible
for breaking the law. We are seen, due to their policies, not as
liberators of freedom, but people who are just as dirty as the
terrorists whom we are calling "evil". In the end we likely murdered
and tortured many, many more individuals than have been by the
"terrorists." We have proven that we can sink low and in that sense the
al-Qaeda won. The attacks on September 11 was not just a symbolic
attack at the heart of capitalism, but at the heart of democracy.
Though the first broke down due to the greeds and excesses of
capitalism itself, the second was shattered by the attacks.
What we need to show that we can correct our mistakes. If someone broke
the law they need to be prosecuted no matter if they are president or
common man. The rule of law must prevail, but what we have shown is
that we are a country of vengeance willing to let loose our laws and
morality when it is of inconvenience and look the other way when our
leaders are doing something wrong. By prosecuting the Bush officials
who have done malevolent things we will show the world that we can
learn from mistakes and most importantly show that no one can be above
the law.
Technology is going to play a more prominent role in democracy. We saw this in the way Obama conducted his campaign. He used technology and a grass-roots movement to go from a first term senator no one knew about to becoming the 44th President of the United States. A lot of this can be attributed to how he used technology.
His army of donors were largely just for thousands of individuals chipping in $10 or $15 dollars on his website. This base of donors was made possible by his use of the internet to collect these funds and the ease at which an individual could contribute. He used MySpace and Facebook effectively to get out his message and solicit more donations. I would always have a message waiting from him whenever I went to facebook and his use of emails to send out how he was doing was a steady stream.
The main facet of Facebook and MySpace is that they lets us feel as if we are in the know. It makes us feel like we are part of the lives of our friends, like we know what they are going through. Obama used this effectively on his campaign. His campaign was that of keeping us in the loop as if we are Obama's friends. This level of personalization let us feel more connected to Obama as we got constant feedback from his campaign trail. By giving us this information we were always in the know as to what his campaign was going through.
However, Obama wants to use this technology based campaign further in his presidency. He launched a
