Looks like they need a semicolon in there as I have no idea how the two opposing ideas correlate in the same sentence. Anyone want to sign up as a hippy marketer?

I don't know if it has something to do with protestor fashion trends, but it seems that there is yet another tree-sitter in Berkeley. This one sits outside of Wheeler Hall while a comrade in orange pants shouts out as students walk to class. I couldn't comprehend what he was shouting, but apparently this tree-sit in has something to do with the $500 million BP deal with UC Berkeley. Police have sealed off the area and were near by. I wonder how much of our tuition money is going to tending after these tree people.

I am working on starting a "Wikipedia for Berkeley." I have not decided what to call it yet, but I want to call it Berki. However, many others want to call it Wikibear. Nonetheless, I think it'd be good to have a site up and running and to start posting content as soon as possible. I was considering writing my own Wiki software in Django, but I found the opportunity cost of actually just having something out there as fast as possible more important than designing a completely new software from the ground up. Therefore, I am going to use MediaWiki and get on with things. Since MediaWiki powers Wikipedia I don't think it is going away anytime soon so it is not a bad choice of software. I just wish the configuration was easier then it currently is. I am proposing it as CalLUG project so I can get others to help me out and eventually let become maintained by the group long after I am gone. As for marketing I think there are many people who are willing to contribute since it is such a useful project. Facebook spamming would be one aspect of "marketing" as well as word of mouth and possibly flyering. Since the community will grow if there is quality content it is important to start with enough content to grow from so people don't just come once and disappear. I hope to have the first milestone by getting this thing released in about a week or so. The second aspect would be writing a lot of content for it. The third would be maintaining growth if there is any which includes speeding up page responses and hopefully finding a dedicated server for it to run on. I think this is an exciting project and something very useful for the Berkeley community. Plus it'll get me to write more and give me experience at running an organization. Plus if it fails I will know it fails pretty quickly.
